Acer’s Aspire 7720G’s design is an acquired taste, but it is very reasonably priced at just $770.99 (With free delivery in buy inc) and provides good all-around performance.

The matte black exterior looks tidy enough, but opening the laptop reveals a keyboard festooned with sticky labels that announce the use of various Intel, ATI and Microsoft components. There’s even a completely unnecessary label slapped next to the webcam on the upper edge of the screen panel to remind you of its existence.

But while the Aspire does not make a great first impression, closer examination reveals that it is quite well designed. It may not be the most powerful laptop in this group – its 2GHz processor is middle of the range – but it produced respectable performance in most of our tests. It’s more than adequate for running ordinary graphics chip that produces an average frame rate of 54fps when running fear at 1,024×768 resolution; it’s also quite capable of handling the latest 3D games. There’s 2GB of Ram, so you have got plenty of memory for tasks such as video editing, and a 160GB hard disk that should be able to store the music and video collections of most home users.

The glossy 17in screen produces rich colors that work well when playing DVDs, and the Aspire also provides DVI and S-video output, so you can connect it to a larger screen. Acer has paid attention to small details, such as the extra keys on the keyboard that allow you to control music playback.

The Aspire doesn’t boast any one feature that makes it stand out from its rivals, but neither does it have any obvious weaknesses, so is worth considering if you are looking for a powerful laptop at a good price.
