Facts about Online Shopping that You Can’t Ignore!
Today, online shopping has become more popular than ever. You can purchase nearly everything that you want via the Internet, including clothes, music, video games, even cars! However, many people are still nervous about doing transactions via the computer instead of face to face. But here are some facts that might surprise you.
Fact #1: Online Shopping is Safer
Although you might think transactions done online put you at greater risk of identity theft and other problems, you actually are at greater risk when conducting traditional in-store transactions. Reliable web sites have taken numerous precautions to ensure the security of your information. Traditional stores have not. Remember you do not know the cashier, the customer behind you, or anyone else in that store.
Fact #2: Most Identity Theft Cases are Offline
As mentioned above, one of the biggest fears keeping some people from shopping online is the threat of identity theft. However, research has shown that Internet transactions account for a small percentage of these cases. And most of those are the results of phishing scams or computer hacking. Offline identity theft can be as simple as having your purse which contains your ID stolen or having your car rental documentation stolen from the garbage or having a family member using your name to start up utilities in their home.
Fact #3: Being Smart is the Best Prevention
While avoiding online shopping may give you some sense of protecting yourself from these modern dangers, the real key to prevention is education. You should take steps to learn how to determine a secure site from an unsecure one so you’ll know if your information is safe before sending it through the Internet. You should also learn how to detect phishing scams and so-called Nigerian business scams that are common in emails and that cost average people millions of dollars in losses every year. Knowledge is power and will protect you while you enjoy all of the perks of online shopping.
The reality is that online shopping is more convenient and cost-effective for most people. It’s also a lot safer than most people believe.
