Online shopping has never been more popular as it is right now. More and more people are discovering the ease and convenience that it provides and they are enjoying every minute of it. Although online shopping can be considered a fairly recent phenomenon, some very apparent trends can already be observed from it.

For instance, based on statistics gathered, about one-third of the people who shop online make use of search engines in order to find what they are looking for. Another one-third of the people who shop online find what they are looking for through word of mouth. Word of mouth is one of the most effective forms of advertising and promotion for internet-based businesses.

Books and digital products are the most popular items online these days. A close second are clothes, shoes, accessories and embarrassing or sensitive purchases (such as lingerie, adult movies or DVDs, and sex toys). Make-up, cosmetics, medicine, vitamins, and groceries are also being bought online more and more often these days. Airline tickets and hotel reservations all over the world are also becoming more popular in the online shopping arena in more recent times.

Aside from these, it can also be observed that online shopping is more popular in first or second world nations. Developing countries have not really adopted the phenomenon yet because in these places, there is still a lack of access to the internet.

In 2006, online shopping sales added up to a grand total of $146.4 billion in the United States alone, which, in effect, translates to about 6% of the total retail product sales in the said country. This number continues to grow by leaps and bounds as each day passes, making it evident that the World Wide Web is one of the most profitable places you can do business in.
