Besides protection your identity, you will also need to protect your funds. By doing this you want to be fully aware of the seller’s payment methods. If all they will accept are check and money orders, and they request payment before shipping the item, you should be sure you are willing to send the money without any guarantee of receiving the time. If the seller will only accept payment from a certain online escrow company you have never heard of, be sure to verify their legitimate existence before making the transaction. If the online escrow company cannot process its own transactions and requires you to set up an account with online payment services, this is not a legitimate service provider.
