Gateway One & Dell XPS One Downsized Desktops

Enter your email address:

Desktop computers are shedding their chunky towers and moving components into the monitor. We checked out two new all-in-one systems, the Gateway one ($1500 without coupon) and the Dell XPS One ($1720 without coupon). HP and Sony sell all-in-ones, too; Mac users have the iMac.

The space challenge can result in innovative design. Dell uses a sensor that makes the buttons controlling volume and other media functions light up when you pass a hand over them. On the Gateway One, ports usually on the back of a tower are on a power brick, and if that’s on the floor, the wires are off your desk.

Both computers’ monitors have very good color and contrast. Sound from the Dell Speakers, in the sides of the monitor, is fair. Sound from Gateway One’s speakers, at the bottom of the monitor, is good. Both computers let you add a set of external speakers.

Both run Windows Vista Home Premium and include Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11n, memory-card reader, webcam, and wireless keyword and mouse.

CR’s take. The Gateway costs less than the Dell and has better sound and faster graphics for game-playing, though its screen is an inch smaller.

What We Tested:

Gateway One: 400GB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics, 19-inch screen (1440×900 resolution).

Dell XPS One: 320GB disk space, Bluetooth connectivity, ATI Radeon HD2400 graphics, 20-inch screen (1680×1050 resolution); Blu-ray drive optional. For More Information in Getting some deals check out Dell Coupons
