iPhone Killers: Samsung F700 Review

samsung F700

The Samsung F700 does have the iPhone look about it, and physically it is about the same length. It features a Home button at the base of the screen and a similar 3.5mm headphone socket at the top, which is housed under protective cover. The 3.2″ touch screen interface is large, and great for viewing content, but its appearance is very simple. Each finger press results in a reassuring vibration effect and is responsive to the touch, although clicking on links via web pages can be more of a challenge.

Additionally, you get a slide-out keyboard (alongside its virtual keyboards) which we found to be really comfortable to use, and the screen automatically rotates to landscape when activated. Just like the iPhone the device lacks a radio, but for multimedia you have around 90MB of free memory to play with, which is not a lot, but you can add up to 8GB microSD cards to boost storage.

The MP3 player is basic, but when closed the controls appear at the front of the phone and the sound quality via the internal speakers/headphones was good. Performance wise the Samsung is quick, but if you want to transfer data to your phone it’s best to use a card reader as the PC suite software is slower at transferring files. For rending web pages you have hi-speed 3G HSDPA access, which is better than the EDGE network that crippled the iPhone, but unlike the latter it does not feature wi-fi.

Its 3MP camera features a basic flash and an auto focus function, but images were still no match for a dedicated camera. You also get a front facing cam for video calls. General call quality was clear, with no visible interference or noise. The battery life from the 1000mAH battery was good. With light use the battery was still going after a week, but with moderate/heavy use you will get a few days.

Many people may not have seen the iPhone, but they will no doubt have heard of its revolutionary interface. But strip the device to its core and you are left with a standard phone element, and a lot of the products in this group offered a better all round option with more attractive contracts.

The Touch Dual and Orbit 2 feature HTC’s second attempt at the touchFlo system, and while not as intuitive as the iPhone’s, it will provide a means to control parts of the interface without the stylus. Also, the Touch Dual may support a slide-out keypad but the Orbit was the better choice due to its additional software.

If we took the W960i’s multimedia prowess and combined it with the Samsung’s touch screen it would be the ultimate iPhone Killer, but it’s let down by its interface and performance problems. Granted, the Samsung F700 is only available on Vodaphone and lacks on the multimedia front due to its basic players. But it has the most productive touch screen of all devices in the group, plus a large slide-out qwerty keyboard, 3MP camera, and it can be had for free on a cheaper 12-month contract.
